Indoor Herb Garden- April ’18

April showers bring May herbs! Or in this case, you can have herbs year round! This month we are exploring indoor herb gardens! I love using fresh herbs in my cooking, and am so excited to finally be able to have them year round!

What we used for our Indoor Herb Garden:

  • Ikea’s VURM
  • Pint Glasses
  • Etching Cream
  • Vinyl stencils (I’ll link you to some other tutorials that don’t use vinyl below!)
  • 4 types of seeds

What went down:

We saw this Ikea hack last summer, but never had time to do it! So we were so excited to be able to do it this year! The only problem is we can’t screw it into the wall at the rental house. So we didn’t think that all the way through. BUT- we have tons of indoor herb garden ideas for you over on our Pinterest!

  1. Clean glasses thoroughly
  2. Print out our Herb Labels (from our Dropbox). If you have a cutting machine, using vinyl comes in handy! That is what I used, but this way works too!
  3. Cut out the herb labels (using a X-acto knife if you have one)
  4. Lay out a sheet of making tape on a cutting board, and place the herb stencil you created on top. Trace the design, then cut out using the x-acto knife again.
  5. Carefully peel up your masking tape stencil, and lay tape on top of the glass. Make sure there are no bubbles around the design! You can also cut the masking tape directly on the glass, using THIS tutorial.
  6. Using a paint brush or foam brush, lay a thick amount of etching cream on top of the stencil.
  7. Let sit for approximately 5 minutes, then rinse off. I usually use warm water.
  8. Peel off stencil, then rinse one more time to make sure all the etching cream is off.
  9. Fill the cup with potting soil, plant your seeds, and keep moist!
  10. Enjoy the herbs when they come up!
Be sure to lay down a thick layer of etching cream!
Washing off the etching cream!

So the cutting the stencil out of the masking tape can be a pain, I won’t lie about that! But there are several other ways of making an etching stencil. Etching is so fun, it’s addicting!

  • Use vinyl to create the stencil (using THIS technique) (or you can special order a stencil from me, just send me an email!)
  • Buy etching stencils. This means you can’t create your own, but you CAN use them over and over and they’re so pretty!
  • And my personal favorite- just using stickers and masking tape!
